Benefits to using a silk or satin pillow case

The main reason silk and satin pillow cases are so beneficial, is because of their smooth surface. It allows for a less friction, that maybe a cotton pillow case could cause. Below are four benefits of using silk or satin pillow cases:

A close up of two satin pillows sitting on top of the bed. The side table is to the right with a vase of lavender, a tray with jewelry, and a kindle.
  • Frizz control: The smooth surface decreases breakage in your hair, meaning it acts as a frizz controller.
  • Fewer creases and wrinkles: Again because of the smooth surface, there is less chance of wrinkles forming on the pillow and transferring to your face. If your face doesn’t have creases, it means less future wrinkles on your skin. (Please note, I think wrinkles and aging is a beautiful thing. We are blessed to keep getting older. But I also believe in taking care of our skin and if I get wrinkles on my face, I hope they are from hours and hours of laughter rather than hours and hours of sleeping on a pillow case that isn’t doing me any favors.)
  • Hydration: Silk and Satin are less likely to absorb hydration, which means your skin and hair end up retaining more moisture. People assume silk and satin pillow cases help with acne which means they help clear up your skin, but in reality, they actually just help keep your skin moisturized. On that note, because they don’t absorb moisture, it means that any oils/moisturizer you put on your face at night will stay on your face rather than soaking into your pillow.
  • Temperature Control: Silk has the ability to keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer because it is a natural insulator. (This same principal does not apply to Satin because it’s a man-made fibre.)

Silk versus Satin

Here’s the thing. Silk and Satin are very similar. There aren’t very many differences between the two. But, there are a couple things to note. Silk is a natural fibre and Satin is a synthetic, man-made, fabric. Satin is going to be a little less breathable, and a little cheaper in price. But besides those things, there isn’t a whole lot of difference in how they help your hair or skin. For me, it ultimately comes down to what I want to spend.
