Night Skin Care Routine
*** I want to start out by saying, I am NOT a dermatologist. Please consult a doctor for any changes or issues you are having. I am still learning about skincare products and how/when/why to use them. These products below are things I have found work for me, and my skin type.
When I told some of my friends my night time skin care routine, they were like “Okay, that’s too much.” And…it kind of looks that way on paper. Or it did at first, but now I’m used to it and it makes sense to me.
My Only Tip
Even if you skip some of these products, the one thing you should for sure do is go from thinnest consistency to thickest consistency. Start with watery items, and then move into gels, and then creams. If you apply your products this way, they soak into the the skin better. I have heard that this isn’t fully true, but I will say in my experience it works best for me and it also helps me stay on track if I have an oder of operation.
Process & Products
Face Wash – Tula Cult Classic Purifying Face Cleanser (This is the cleanser on the days I don’t shower, or on the days when I shower at night.)
Face Wash – Good Molecules Rosewater Daily Cleansing Gel (I have been using this product so much lately, and do recommend it as well.
Toner – Thayers Alcohol Free Witch Hazel (Unscented)
Retinol – The Ordinary Retinol .5% in Squalane (I use this ONLY on Sunday)
Glycolic Acid – The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution (I use this ONLY on Wednesday)
Serum – Good Molecules Niacinamide Serum
Eye Gel – Derma-E Ultra Hydrating Alkaline Eye Gel (This is my favorite product I use.)
Moisturizer – Tula Protect + Plump Firming & Hydrating Face Moisturizer (I use this at night because it doesn’t make my face feel sticky like the moisturizer I use in the morning does.)
Moisturizer – L’Occitane Shea Whipped Face Mask-Cream 10% (This is my new favorite, but I haven’t used it long enough personally to not also suggest the Tula moisturizer.)
Face Mask – Fourth Ray Beaty Soak It Up Hydrating Hyaluronic Face Mask (Once a Week. This is by far my most favorite product to keep my face feeling hydrated!)
Reason for a Schedule
Retinol: I only use this product on Sunday night because it makes your skin sensitive to sunlight. So, no matter what day you use Retinol, you should apply the small amount at night. The reason I personally chose Sunday is because I know myself. I will wake up foggy-eyed on Monday morning a talk myself out of doing my skin care routine. But, because I used retinol on Sunday night, I know I need to protect my skin on Monday with sun screen. So it’s my motivation to keep up with my routine.
Glycolic Acid: This product will remove the top layer of skin, so other products can soak in and really help your skin. But, this means it shouldn’t be used daily. And it also shouldn’t be used on the day you use retinol because retinol can irritate the new, uncovered skin. Or at least that’s how I am interpreting everything I have read so far. I use it on Wednesday because it’s a few days after I use the retinol and a few days before I will use it again.
Niacinamide: I use this at night because you shouldn’t mix this with Vitamin C, which I use in the morning because Vitamin C works better in the daylight.
Face Mask: Okay, I have only ever used this face mask at night. I always lather it on and wash it off in the morning. It says you can put it on and then take it off, or leave it on for extra hydration. I personally am like give me all the hydration. But you may want to use this as an actual mask. Do not use this on they day you use retinol because it has Vitamin C in it and Vitamin C and retinol do not mix well.
